Reuse, Repair, REMAKE your electronic devices

The REMAKE team is a unique project to reduce electronic waste by holding workshops to assist participants to fix their devices thereby promoting sustainable living. They hope to pass on to their participants not only their fixed devices, but also newfound repair skills and the message of sustainability.

We talked to June from the REMAKE team, currently a year 3 student majoring in Computer Engineering. She joined last year because of a Taiwanese documentary she had watched called “Plus-minus two degrees”. The scenes displaying the state of our environment worsening shocked her and made her reflect on what she can do to contribute to solving the issue. Thus, she finds her experience at REMAKE extremely fruitful as she is able to see the HKUST community notice and spark conversations about the e-waste problem through the activities that REMAKE holds. She wants people to rethink their daily consumption from simply cutting down on what we purchase to reusing and repairing what we buy. It is important to realize the impact that each of us can make in a collective effort to shift our lifestyles to become more sustainable.

As for the organization’s future plans, REMAKE will continue to conduct regular repair parties and hold more exciting events around the campus (if the situation allows), so stay tuned! In fact, REMAKE was initially planned to be more than just an internal school project, as they are currently on the hunt for more collaborations with both internal and external organizations such as the other universities in HK soon.
