HKUST to warm up to the launch of the Municipal Solid Waste Charging Scheme

After years of talks in waste reduction, the Hong Kong Government has officiated to kickstart the Municipal Solid Waste Charging Scheme in August 2024.

Under the "polluter-pays" principle, all waste disposed of by residential and non-residential premises will be subjected to charging based on its quantity.

Ready with us on campus

Here at HKUST, a pilot scheme will be implemented across all the offices and staff quarters from January 2024 to get members well-prepared ahead of the scheme.

When the scheme is in place, all the offices, staff residents, student halls, catering outlets, and shops will order and pay for the “HKUST designated garbage bags” from the Campus Management Office (CMO).

Dump Less, Save More!

We encourage you to reduce waste at source and recycle as much as possible. The less waste we create, the more we can save for the University, and the world at large! Let’s join hands to create a more sustainable campus environment.

If you have something to say about the scheme, please feel free to share it with us at green@ust.hk
