Healthy vegan lifestyle went viral
A group of 14 HKUST green team members of students and staff have come together to form a Green Monday X HKUST Campaign. Even with different academic backgrounds, they are all passionate about the environment and animal welfare in common. They aim to establish and promote a sustainable diet on campus to improve the environmental performance, students’ engagement, and awareness of animal welfare issues, by making low-carbon and sustainable living simple, viral and actionable.
“The reason I wanted to organize the campaign was that I hoped more people can learn about the benefits of veganism for both people and the environment. Before I signed up for it, I had a chance to deep down and investigate the vegan culture through a group project. I found it heartbroken to sacrifice animal welfare solely for human needs. Moreover, the livestock industry produces an immense amount of greenhouse gases that should not be overlooked! Eating more veggies can not only eliminate the pain that animals are suffering but also boost our energy levels and increase concentration. Hopefully, the ‘GreenMondays’ campaign can be maintained in the future! Love & Peace!” said Kara TSE, a Year2 undergraduate student majoring in Environmental Management and Technology, one of the leaders of HKUST Green Monday Campaign.
With a view to create a sustainable atmosphere to better captivate students, reshape their dietary patterns, rebrand plant-based foods’ impression as well as promote students’ sustainable living habits, HKUST “GreenMondays” has served remarkable efforts to initiate green movements within the community.
The campaign was kicked off by the first online talk held by Green Monday HK in March 2022, with more than 100 HKUST students participating. Alongside, HKUST “GreenMondays” started managing their website and official Instagram account to unfold different ideas such as sharing a simple plant-based recipe, promoting the Green Easter Game event, and working with campus caterers to increase the proportion of veggie diet in new semester. The campaign has resulted in almost 400% increase in Instagram followers within 3 months.
In the coming year, HKUST” GreenMondays” will further collaborate with different green organizations to organize talks and host activities to share sustainable messages with the HKUST community including cooking sessions on a simple plant-based diet, movie nights, showing infographic display, producing recipe booklets, and holding an immersive photo booth.
