The Sustainability Education Community is recruiting!
HKUST’s Sustainability Education Community of Practice (SEC) was officially launched in October 2017. The SEC seeks to act as both a professional and social network for interested members of the HKUST community, creating a space for multidisciplinary dialogue, collaboration, and support for sustainability education and practice.
Currently comprising junior- and senior-level faculty, teaching associates, staff, and research postgraduate students, the SEC is eager to grow its diverse membership to allow for cross-fertilisation and collaboration across disciplines. The SEC is not limited to those who are already active or experienced in the sustainability field; a key objective is to build bridges to the broader HKUST community and identify opportunities to contribute to sustainability collectively.
In the past year, we have hosted multiple events to facilitate sharing of diverse perspectives and practices in sustainability, while exploring opportunities for collaboration. Our most recent workshop involved the establishment of three core project groups that will guide our strategy and plans for the coming year. Below is a short overview of our projects – if you’d like to learn more or get involved with one or more of these projects, please get in contact with the relevant project leader!
Project 1: ‘Human Behaviour’
Development of real-life cases on sustainability for teaching & learning purposes in multiple disciplines, with the intention to foster behavioural change towards sustainability.

Project 2: ‘Communicating Sustainability’
Connecting with multiple sustainability experts within the University to develop discipline-specific resources and workshops for incorporating sustainability into diverse curricula.

Project 3: ‘Experiential Learning’
Creation of a resource database to connect faculty and students with experiential learning opportunities on campus.

The SEC is committed to supporting its members to intensify their academic careers in sustainability education. In May this year, we sponsored an SEC member, Aidan Wong, to attend a Sustainability Across the Curriculum Leadership Workshop in California, hosted by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).
