Unleashing a Sustainable Future with Our Living Labs Projects

The Sustainable and Smart Campus (SSC) Living Lab Week kicked off on October 14th with a grand opening ceremony attended by over 100 faculty, staff, and students, as well as distinguished industry leaders, sustainability experts, and HKUST Council Members.  

In the opening remarks, Prof. Kar Yan Tam, Vice-President for Administration and Business emphasized HKUST's commitment to sustainability, with the Living Lab initiative playing a key role in accelerating the development of sustainability solutions.  

 

SSC Living Lab Week – Project Exhibitions 

This year’s SSC Living Lab week, themed “Unleashing a Sustainable Future,” showcases the latest progress of the Living Lab research projects.  The exhibition featured projects from students and faculty teams with research areas ranging from carbon capture technologies, to AI smart parking solutions, to drone-powered building inspections. 

Guests interacted with research teams and their prototypes to learn how their Living Lab is advancing sustainability technology development.  We were honored to be visited by HKUST council members, Mr. Patrick Yeung, Mr. Billy Wong, Mr Peter Chung, council vice-chairman Prof. Patrick Yeung,, and many esteemed guests from government, industry and educational sectors in attendance.  

 

GreenTech Startup Research Collaboration 

This year’s SSC Week drew particular attention to the research partnerships between greentech startups and HKUST faculty.  Three Hong Kong Science and Technology Park companies are part of the Living Labs program and to drive innovative solutions and ensure our research delivers real societal benefits. 

During the week,10 project booths with prototypes were showcased for attendees to explore the innovative solutions from some of our SSC projects.  

 

Campus Tours and Sustainability Networking Sessions 

Also, guided tours of our smart sustainable campus allowed participants to witness the implementation of these innovations in real-world settings. 

Another highlight of the event was the networking session, which brought together sustainability-minded peers from various sectors, facilitated meaningful discussions and the exchange of ideas, furthering our goal of inspiring the next wave of smart sustainable innovations. 

 

About the Sustainable Smart Campus as a Living Lab Program 

The Sustainable Smart Campus as a Living Lab program was launched in 2019 with HK$50 million commitment to funding research projects that use the HKUST Clear Water Bay campus as a test bed for sustainability innovation.  The program offers project funding, operational expert advice, as well as physical campus space for advancing and accelerating research that is smart, sustainable, and visible on campus.
