Exploring Low-Carbon Living Through an Eco-Stroll in Sham Shui Po
To better understand how sustainability can be integrated into everyday life, HKUST students recently joined the "Low Carbon Lifestyle: Eco-Stroll in Sham Shui Po", an educational tour organised by V'air and sponsored by SOYJOY.
The tour introduced practical low-carbon lifestyle concepts through the lens of clothing, food, housing, and transport. Students explored Sham Shui Po's rich community culture and discovered how local businesses and residents are contributing to a more sustainable future.
Students visited the newly relocated Pang Jai Fabric Market, the Hong Kong Design Centre, Green@Community and various community-based sustainability hotspots in Sham Shui Po, gaining insights into responsible consumption, second-hand clothing shopping, resource sharing, plant-based diets, and circular economy practices. Through discussions and on-site observations, they explored how everyday choices, from purchasing pre-loved items to reducing waste, can help lower carbon emissions and support more sustainable communities.
“Sham Shui Po is definitely worth spending an afternoon in! During our visit, we explored how a vegetarian restaurant on Tai Nan Street draws in both locals and travellers, alongside traditional spots like the Pang Chai Fabric Market and local heritage shops that offer a nostalgic glimpse into Hong Kong's past. Our key take-home question from our advisor is: How can existing infrastructure benefit local residents while maintaining long-term sustainability?”
Owen Kwan, SSCI Year 2
By connecting classroom learning with real-world examples, the Eco-Stroll helped students recognise that sustainable living is not only about major changes, but also about the everyday choices each of us makes in our communities.
