Community Piano: Connecting People, Music, and Art
“When you play the piano, you’re not just making music; you’re sharing a piece of your soul, promoting well-being in the hearts of those who listen.”
As you pass the atrium, the soothing sounds of piano music may draw you to LG5 near the escalator and catering outlets, where students and staff are engaging with the Community Piano Initiative launched by the Sustainability/Net-Zero Office. Since its debut in October 2025, this initiative has sought to integrate music and visual arts, enriching the community experience.
The initiative features a preloved piano, transformed into an art piece by artist Zoie Lam in collaboration with 20 talented students and staff. The artwork reflects the vibrant spirit of our colorful and joyful campus, aiming to foster connections and provide an outlet for creativity while showcasing the therapeutic effects of art. Zoie noted that her creative inspiration stemmed from experiencing the campus environment, integrating elements of our students' talents with her own artistic style.
"Piano for All": Thanksgiving Event
In late November, the community gathered for the event "Piano for All: Music, Games, and Giving Back," designed to recharge minds and enhance well-being during Thanksgiving. The lively lunch session featured live musical performances from around 30 students across diverse backgrounds, showcasing piano and other instruments alongside individual and group singing, including contributions from the school choir. This created a warm atmosphere for connection and support among peers. A moment of silence was held to honor those affected by the tragic fire in Tai Po, deepening the sense of community.
Attendees were also encouraged to contribute to the community by supporting local charities—Oxfam Hong Kong and Recovery Art—through charity sales at the event. Donations aimed to bolster local well-being initiatives, reinforcing the spirit of giving back.
A Space for Relaxation and Creativity
The community piano serves as a vital platform for students and staff to take a break and share music with others. Open 24/7, it provides a backdrop for relaxation between classes, a space for forming new friendships, and a cherished part of our shared HKUST story. This initiative underscores the importance of community and creative expression, allowing attendees to forge connections in a welcoming environment.
We invite everyone to play a tune, share a moment, create joyful memories, and foster a genuine sense of belonging.
