HKUST Students Crowned Champions in HK Express's "Gotta GO! Sustainable Explorer Challenge"

Empowering the Next Generation of Sustainable Travel Leaders

The "Gotta GO! Sustainable Explorer Challenge", launched by HK Express in 2024, is an exciting initiative that inspires university students to reimagine travel through the lens of sustainability. By designing innovative, low-carbon itineraries and bringing them to life, participants become ambassadors for eco-conscious tourism, while proving that adventure and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.

This year, the competition expanded to include teams from four universities: HKBU, CUHK, PolyU, and HKUST. After a fierce competition, the champion title was awarded to HKUST's team "Duominds", comprised of students Tammy and Yanice, for their meticulously planned, low-carbon journey to Shizuoka.

From Classroom to Real-World Impact

To equip participants with the tools for success, the challenge provided training workshops and lectures on sustainable travel principles—from designing eco-friendly itineraries to understanding the why behind conscious tourism. Students then applied these lessons to craft creative travel plans, which were evaluated by a panel of industry experts.

The winning team's trip stood out for its exceptional balance of sustainability, cultural immersion, and enjoyment. This beautiful balance embodied the spirit of the competition perfectly as the organizers emphasized many times that sustainability shouldn't come at the cost of joy, and we can all find harmony between reducing environmental impact and creating unforgettable experiences.

A Holistic Approach to Sustainable Travel

Duominds took a comprehensive approach to minimize their environmental footprint while maximizing authenticity:

Transportation:

  • Chose HK Express's Lite package with carry-on luggage only
  • Used digital boarding passes to eliminate paper waste
  • Walked and used public transport throughout their journey

Accommodation:

  • Selected a homestay with local tea farmers for authentic cultural exchange
  • Stayed at a zero-waste hotel near Mount Fuji with eco-cleaning systems and zero-waste breakfast

Mindful Eating:

  • Pre-ordered plant-based meals for their flight
  • Enjoyed cuisine made from local, seasonal ingredients
  • Brought reusable containers and utensils

Cultural Immersion:

  • Participated in green tea harvesting and farm-to-table cooking
  • Interviewed traditional tea farmer
  • Visited renewable energy-powered conservation sites

Beyond the Itinerary: Storytelling for Change

Duominds amplified their impact through creative social media engagement:

  • Created pre-trip sustainable travel guides
  • Shared daily Reels and Stories featuring zero-waste hacks
  • Posted behind-the-scenes content of cultural experiences
  • Launched post-trip reflections with practical eco-travel tips

The “Gotta GO!” challenge isn’t just a competition, it’s a catalyst for change. By empowering students like Tammy and Yanice to design trips that prioritize culture, joy, and sustainability, HK Express and partner universities are shaping a new generation of travelers who see every journey as a chance to make a difference.

Congratulations to Team Duominds and all participants for leading the change!
