Growing Green Minds: Kindergarten Students Explore Sustainable Gardening at HKUST
On 18 March 2026, the HKUST LG7 Community Garden welcomed 22 K1 and K2 students from a local kindergarten, together with their caregivers and teachers, for an engaging educational visit on sustainable gardening, food production, and campus biodiversity. The visit brought together 46 participants, offering young learners a memorable opportunity to connect with nature and discover how plants are grown and cared for on campus.
The visit began at the University's greenhouse nursery, where the children learned how young plants are propagated and nurtured before being transplanted to growing spaces across campus. Guided by HKUST Landscaping Staff, the students observed seedlings at different stages of growth and gained a simple introduction to the importance of caring for plants from their earliest stages.
Through interactive games and guided exploration, the children discovered a variety of plant species in the nursery. These activities encouraged curiosity, close observation, and an appreciation for the diversity of plants that support healthy and vibrant green spaces.
The group then visited the LG7 Community Garden, where students participated in a sensory learning experience by touching and smelling herbs, vegetables, and other crops grown in the garden. Through observing how plants are cultivated and cared for, participants developed an understanding of the connection between food production, nature, and sustainable gardening practices. They were also introduced to organic growing methods and the importance of managing land sustainably to support food production while caring for natural resources.
To conclude the visit, each child received a flower seedling to take home and continue nurturing, encouraging ongoing learning and a stronger connection with nature beyond the campus. The children also received HKUST reusable cutlery souvenirs, promoting responsible consumption and demonstrating how simple daily actions can help reduce waste and support a more sustainable future.
