Exploring Butterflies, Plants and Sustainable Urban Habitats
Following the successful launch of the HKUST Butterfly Garden and the enthusiastic response to the seminar “Hong Kong Butterflies: Diversity & Conservation”, two lunchtime Butterfly Discovery Workshops were held on 25 and 27 February 2026 for staff and students interested in exploring local biodiversity.
Led by experts from Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve, the workshops introduced participants to the fascinating diversity of butterflies found in Hong Kong and the important ecological relationships between butterflies and the plants they rely on. Participants learned to identify common butterfly species and gained insights into the roles of host plants and nectar plants in supporting different stages of butterfly life cycles.
Using the HKUST Butterfly Garden as a living classroom, participants observed butterflies and plants up close while learning how different plant species provide food, shelter and breeding habitats for wildlife. Through these hands-on experiences, participants developed a deeper appreciation of biodiversity and the intricate connections between flora and fauna.
The workshops also explored how thoughtful habitat design and appropriate plant selection support butterfly life cycles and contribute to biodiversity-friendly green spaces. Participants learned how the sustainable planning, use and management of urban green spaces can support wildlife, strengthen ecosystem resilience and contribute to biodiversity conservation, empowering them to play a role in creating more nature-positive communities.
