A Campus Transformed: How Smart Bins and Passionate Ambassadors Revolutionized Food Waste at HKUST

Over the past four months, the HKUST community has turned daily food waste into a powerful story of collective environmental action. Between April and August 2026, a unique combination of smart infrastructure and passionate community engagement helped the University take a massive step forward in its net-zero journey.

Through the Smart Food Waste Bin Recycling Programme, staff and student residents embraced a new daily habit, proving that grassroots circularity can drive institutional success. The impact of this collective effort is staggering:

• 12,100 kg of food waste was diverted from landfills to O·PARK1, where it was transformed into renewable energy and compost.
• 40% community participation rate was achieved across the Staff Quarters.
• 10,000+ campus-wide food waste recycling actions were recorded.
• 8,000+ transactions were successfully linked to GREEN$ incentive rewards.

Behind the Numbers: The Staff Quarter Sustainability Ambassadors

While the Smart Bins provided the infrastructure, the real driving force behind these numbers was the community. To bridge the gap between awareness and action, HKUST launched the Staff Quarter Sustainability Ambassador Program, extending successful waste reduction initiatives directly into residential communities.

Twenty passionate Sustainability Ambassadors from across the Staff Quarters stepped up to lead the charge. Throughout the four-month program, participants received comprehensive training on HKUST's sustainability goals and proper food waste separation.

To deepen their understanding of the circular economy, the ambassadors embarked on an educational eco-tour of the O·PARK1 facility to witness Hong Kong’s industrial food waste recycling process firsthand. They also attended hands-on food waste upcycling workshops to discover creative solutions for reducing waste at home. To keep the momentum going, the program featured regular communication channels, daily check-in photos, a monthly "Best Action" photo competition, and a final award recognizing the residential tower that achieved the best recycling performance.

Voices from the Community

The initiative successfully sparked new conversations about sustainable living, turning neighbors into environmental advocates.

“While I was already recycling food waste, this programme introduced me to other green initiatives like the Green$ app, " shared China, one of the  Sustainability Ambassadors. "It shows how simple activities can encourage more people to build sustainable habits.”

Another ambassador, Raquel, highlighted the community-building aspect of the initiative: “This programme has been a wonderful way to bring neighbors together. I've enjoyed sharing what I've learned with other residents, and even with friends and family outside of campus. It's inspiring to see them become more interested in food waste recycling and sustainable living.”

The ambassadors also shared practical tips in a recent campus video campaign to encourage others to join in:

• "Food waste isn't just leftovers — it's your cooking prep scraps too."
• "The bin is super easy to use. Just scan, drop, and you're done."

A Lasting Legacy of Green Action

The program formally concluded with a warm thank-you gathering, recognizing the ambassadors' outstanding contributions. Although this cohort's training has wrapped up, the 20 ambassadors will continue to actively champion food waste recycling and green initiatives within the Staff Quarters.

Behind every data point is a neighbor, a family, a domestic helper, or an ambassador who chose to care. HKUST’s Smart Food Waste Revolution continues to demonstrate that when you combine the right infrastructure, rewarding incentives, and passionate people, meaningful behavioral change follows.
