Be a Responsible Consumer!

The Jockey Club Sustainable Campus Consumer Programme is a cross universities initiative to promote the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. The Programme aims to groom a new generation of more responsible and thoughtful consumers by implementing a series of campus improvement and education initiatives in each of the Hong Kong Sustainable Campus Consortium (HKSCC) member institution over a three-year period.

The Programme has three core areas of focus and aims to:

1. Responsible Choices

Reduce the overall campus consumption of energy and water by installing smart electricity meters and motion-activated showerheads;

2. Responsible Consumption

Reduce the use of disposable food and beverage containers by developing takeaway container borrowing programmes; and

3. Responsible Consumer Activism

Increase the awareness and understanding of eco-labelling through various educational initiatives such as training in sustainability leadership and “carbon foodprint” labelling.

Last year, different kinds of activates were organised that provided opportunities for universities members to know more about SDG#12. Including SDG#12 GAMIthon, visit to the Mills, Sustainable Fashion Seminar, Sustainable Fashion Short-Form Video Competition etc. to promote sustainable fashion. We are so proud that some HKUST students participated in different competitions and won thousands of cash prize and funding budget! Congrats to the winners again! A group of 40 future sustainability leaders also underwent a series of sustainable knowledges and leadership soft skills training to equip themselves for the future sustainable challenges.

Don’t be disappointed if you have missed our previous events! This is just the beginning and in the coming year (2022-2023), you will be seeing us a lot in HKUST.

Firstly, a whole new set of behavioural activated showerheads will be installed in student hall 5 & 6 as a pilot scheme. The light of the showerhead will be changed according to your shower time and remind you to take shorter shower. It can also collect the data of water usage to our new data dashboard and visualise your real time data of energy and water usage. By knowing the consumption data, we believe you can save better! The installation will be followed by a series of inter-hall competitions and award scheme, not only in HKUST but across 8 universities! Stay tuned to know more!

Besides the infrastructure enhancement in residential halls, this year we will be focusing on one of the biggest components in your campus life, FOOD! We will introduce different sustainable food consumption ideas though a whole new series of interactive and fun campaigns, including:

  1.  #EatForThePlanet

The first set of carbon “foodprint” label on campus will be released at LG1 Can.teen II and LG7 Asia Pacific Catering outlets. This set of labels can be your quick-reference to make less carbon impact choices.

  1. Eco-fish series

There will be a series of talks, site visit sand hands on experiences to let you know more about local responsible food consumption, especially focusing on local aquaculture;

  1. Eco-labels

Time to play bingo! An eco-bingo with giveaway is now on our Instagram. Find the eco-labelled products around you and win an eco-labelled snack!

Sharing and workshop on eco-labels. Are there any taste difference between FairTrade and non-FairTrade products? Come join our upcoming workshop and you can even try it out!

  1. Launch of pilot Reusable Meal Containers Lending System

One of the highlight this year will be the first automatic reusable meal container lending system for university communities will be piloted in HKUST! This machine will provide a much more convenience way for the canteen users to reduce single-used plastic. This pilot aims to provide a potential solution to close the loop for the disposable takeaway containers.
