2023 Sustainability Design Thinking Program
To bring together the young forces in HKUST and HKUST(GZ), the Life Cycle Lab designed a 9-day Sustainable Design Thinking Certificate Program for the students in both campuses. The 31 students used Life Cycle Approaches to identify creative and innovative solutions for today’s sustainability challenges like water, food waste, recycling and energy. They have implemented Life Cycle Thinking as a wonderful framework to help solve today’s problems without compromising our future, accelerating our journey towards building a Net-Zero environment.

Dr. Meike's Training Course on: "Moving towards net zero?" with the Green Council.
The academic lead of the HKUST Life Cycle Lab, Dr. Meike Sauerwein, successfully delivered a training course on “Moving towards net zero? – How to quantify GHGs emission and other environmental impacts of products by adopting a life-cycle approach” for the Green Council on 10 Feb 2023. Highly experienced professionals from the building, infrastructure and manufacturing industries came together for an interactive workshop discussion on how to interpret life cycle assessment results and how such knowledge can be used for better decision making.

Life Cycle Lab Launch Event (click here for post-event insights).
To celebrate the opening of the Life Cycle Lab at HKUST, we hosted an event where there we networked with practitioners and exploration of future development needs. We featured HKUST start-ups with a focus on life cycle thinking including Breer, who made use of leftover bread to create beer and Not Only Powder who made use of imperfect fruits to create fruit crisps.
