Organized by HKUST Sustainability Unit, Green O’ Camp Project 2016 is now inviting the participation and echo of your society!
Background
To promote sustainability among student societies and encourage societies step forward to hold their activities in a sustainable manner, HKUST Sustainability Unit is presenting Green O’ Camp Award and Lets Go Green Award to O’ Camps. Participating O’ Camps are required to complete a number of specific Green Actions from a ‘Green Checklist’, and formulate new green ideas. Click on Award Details to learn more.
Actions and awards
1) Green O’ Camp Awards 2016
Objectives:
To promote sustainability among student societies and encourage societies step forward to hold their activities in a sustainable manner.
How to win the awards?
The top five O’ Camps that have fulfilled the highest number of actions in the ‘Green Checklist’ will be awarded! Depending on the pointsone has achieved, they will be awarded with different medal.
To be able to win a gold award, one must achieve at least 40 green actions. Silver award winner must score at least 35 points but not exceed 39. For Bronze, one must earn 25 points. The top five scorers of all entrants win the award. Each of the participated societies will receive a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of their work and their contribution to the environment.

How to prove that participated O’ Camp has fulfilled the actions?
O’ Camps can be creative with ways to prove that they have achieved the green actions. Examples of valid proof can include:
Action 1: No food waste
- Menu and name of caterer
Action 2: Reduce waste
- Photos of all O’ Camp members holding their water bottles, text message/ announcement
- List of sponsored items received, or receipt from charity organization
- One or more O’ Camp members putting recyclable materials in the recycling bin
Action 3: Save energy
- Itinerary of O’ Camp
2) Let’s Go Green Award
Objectives:
An open competition aims to raise green awareness and encourage the societies to initiate green ideas and practices, and award good behavior with $500 sponsorship.
How to win the award?
Societies are eligible for a Green O’ Camp Award, and a $500 stipend, by completing two actions:
- Formulating 3 creative and practical green actions that are beyond the green checklist provided by Sustainability Unit
- Submitting and posting at least 3 photos on the wall of HKUST Sustainability Facebook page to show the green achievements. Five winners are picked by most likes from the community.

The sponsorship should be used in sustainable related activities of the societies, such as ordering veggies, buying environmental friendly products/souvenirs and organizing environmental related activities
Registration procedure and application deadline
To be eligible for the award, the O’ Camp must:
- Fill in the application form and submit the contact information of their Green Ambassador.
- Compete for the award through emailing green checklist with supporting documents to green@ust.hk from 28th June 2016 to 28th August.
- Submit the green checklist provided by the Sustainability Unit with achieved actions by the deadline of 26th August 2016 to green@ust.hk.
- O’ Camp organizers should also provide not less than 10 photos, email announcement and/or email correspondence of the greens actions done during the orientation camp period for approval.
Result announcement
The maximum amount of awarding prize is $2000, which the Sustainability Unit will pay by cheque or autopay. The societies shall fill in the payment form provided by the Sustainability Unit.
Results will be announced through email and HKUST Sustainability Facebook Page in September.
Remarks
In case of large number of competitors, interviews with applicants and site visit aims at checking environmental performances of societies will be one of the selection criteria. Green Ambassadors should be in charge for introducing green actions done by the societies during preparation, in camp, and post camp periods.
Similar to last year, we will also be holding the O Camp Surplus Materials Recycling Activity to collect and donate unwanted O camp materials such as souvenirs and food to Feeding Hong Kong, Salvation Army, Crossroad Foundations and to the Connect Program for overseas service learning trip for those in need. Collection boxes will be placed at student hall lobbies, LG4 common room entrance (near lift 3) and LG5 student amenities (near meeting room 4) during O camp period. Please encourage helpers and freshmen to recycle during the O Camp.
