No food waste

Food waste is a major waste category and issue in Hong Kong, and accounts for approximately 30% of all municipal solid waste (MSW)—the largest category of MSW in the city.
Similarly, food waste is the largest waste category at HKUST, and our University puts in great effort to separate and recycle food waste, as food waste is a useful organic resource and can be transformed into compost, renewable energy (biogas), and even biofuels. Currently, the majority of the food waste collected on campus is sent to O Park, the Hong Kong Government’s organic waste treatment facility.
Support our efforts to reduce and recycle food waste in your daily life!

At Canteens...
- Only order what you can eat
- Ask for “less rice” (you could get a discount on your meal!)
- Pack any leftovers for your next meal (if you don’t have a container with you, you can borrow a reusable lunchbox outside LG1 Canteen and Passione/opposite LT-C)
- Should you have food waste left on your trays, upon returning your tray at the return station, our canteen and dishwashing staff will help to separate food waste for recycling!

At Student Halls...
Place food waste into the designated food waste bin at your floor’s common room

At Staff Quarters...
- You can get a household food waste bin from the Staff Housing Office for free
- Once your bin is full, bring your food waste down to food waste collection points on the G/F
