Host Events Sustainably
General Tips:
When hosting an event, there are always opportunities to integrate waste management strategies and principles to foster sustainability. By adopting eco-friendly practices, such as choosing reusables over disposables and going paperless, these small actions add up to meaningful impact and demonstrates HKUST’s sustainability commitment.
Explore our tips below to host events sustainably. For more information, please refer to our HKUST Sustainable Events Guidelines.

Go Paperless
Embrace digital solutions by using QR codes for event programs, schedules, and feedback forms.

Mindful Souvenirs
Limit giveaways to only what is necessary and consider sustainable options, such as eco-friendly or locally sourced items.

Choose Sustainable Backdrops & Props
Opt for reusable or recyclable backdrops and props, such as honeycomb boards or fabric banners. This not only reduces waste but also adds a unique touch to your event.

Waste Management
Coordinate with CMO ahead of your event by calling 2358 6421 to request recycling bins or stands to facilitate proper waste separation and disposal at your event.
Food & Drinks:
To promote sustainability and avoid single-use disposable waste, we encourage you to explore sustainable catering and serving options at your event. HKUST has banned the sale of bottled water under 1 liter on campus in 2018 with the aim to reduce disposables. Support the University’s sustainability efforts by promoting the use of reusables at your event where possible.

Use Reusables
Coordinate with your vendors to provide reusable serving options for food and beverages

Borrow Reusable Lunchboxes and Cups
The Sustainability / Net-Zero Office offers a borrowing scheme for reusable lunchboxes and cups. Contact us at green@ust.hk to reserve these items for your event!
