From Waste to Orchard

Turn Every Hall's Food Waste into a Shared Harvest!

Starting on 1 October 2026, student halls will take part in Harvest Quest, the first ever inter-hall food waste recycling challenge. By recycling food waste through the Smart Food Waste Bins, residents can help their hall's fruit tree flourish, unlock new fruit levels, and work towards fruit rewards.

The more food waste the hall residents recycle, the better fruit tree flourishes. Progress will be tracked throughout the campaign, allowing residents to see how their collective efforts contribute to reducing food waste and supporting HKUST's sustainability goals.

Join the quest, grow your hall's fruit tree, and turn food waste into a shared harvest.

  • Only food waste recycled through the Smart Food Waste Bins will be measured.

  • Failing to meet a target will result in a downgrade to a lower fruit tier.

  • Exceeding the target weight will not change the reward fruit, which will remain the hall's voted fruit choice.

* Note: If you do not have the GREEN$ mobile app, you can use the printed public QR code attached to the bins to activate the Smart Food Waste Recycling Bin.

For more information, refer to the Environmental Protection Department’s food waste recycling guide.

Redeem your GREEN$ points for household essentials or supermarket vouchers at GREEN@COMMUNITY Stores or on the app! Learn more here.

By recycling regularly, you not only earn points but also contribute to reducing food waste in your community. The more often you use the app and bins, the more rewards you can accumulate, making recycling both environmentally friendly and personally beneficial.
